Wayside Horns

Fresno is looking into wayside horns. This from Tuesday's agenda for the weekly council agenda:

9:45 A.M. Request staff to return to Council with an update on the evaluation of the “wayside horn” for use at grade crossings on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) main line throughout Fresno –
Councilmember Calhoun

So when the crossing system fails there's no train horn for backup. Brilliant idea!

Not quite. Wayside horns have indicators that tell crews the devices are working properly. If the indicators are not lit, the train whistles as normal.

Where they're used in suburban Chicago (Mundelein, IL), neighbors seem to appreciate having the noise concentrated at the actual crossing, rather than extending for a quarter mile on either side of it. The wayside horns are used on several crossings on the CN (ex Wisconsin Central), which also hosts the Metra "North Central Service" trains.

Also used in Riverside Calif, on the UP, also in the Roseville CA area.

Seem to work great. As was mentioned, they still have the fail safe signal that allows the normal whistle if necessary.

I observed wayside horns in use along the UP (ex-CNW) through Ames, IA last fall. As mentioned above, they have an indicator for the train crews. They also sound really strange.
