Speed Relative to a Fixed Position
Author: broken_link

I had to dig through the photos that I shot over the past year to find a few that successfully demonstrated motion. As speed is a relative thing, this was difficult since I usually focus on using fast enough apertures to avoid motion blur. This task was made more difficult since the places that I enjoy shooting are not known for high speed trains but rather long freights grinding over mountain passes.

The first set of 3 shots are taken at Sandcut and depict the hurry up and wait scenario that the trains will face as they enter the Tehachapi bottleneck.

Continuing with the Tehachapi theme but playing with a long exposure, the next image was a 5 minute exposure shot at Bealville.

Curves and exhaust highlight motion in the next two shots of UP trains in the Feather River Canyon and on Donner Pass.
