Brakes

Where does the actual brake action occur when a train begins to slow down? On the wheel, on the axle? I am referring to the cars that are pulled by the locos. I have never actually looked. Thanks.

Freight train brakes apply to rolling-stock wheels.

In addition, many fleets of passenger equipment have disc brakes much like a car. The brake discs may be outboard or inboard of the wheel. For freight, the above post about the brake shoes gripping the outer diameter of the wheel is correct in more cases than not.

On passenger trains, disc brakes are used:

but not in all cases. Many passenger cars (Amtrak included) have tread brakes. In some cases, cars have both tread and disc brakes.

Yes, but also on the Bombardiers they use tread braking along with disc braking, here's my contribution photo wise ;-)
