Western Railroad Discussion > PlacardsDate: 05/08/07 08:30 Placards Author: GP40X The thread regarding the hazardous materials started me thinking. We all see numbered placards on the sides of freight cars but do not always know what the numbers stand for. Some are obvious, like 1075 for liquefied petroleum gas, but the contents of the cars are not always spelled out on the cars. Is there a central location, or site, that has alpha name designations for the numeric indicators on the placards? TIA.

Here's the placard interpreter: http://hazmat.dot.gov/pubs/erg/unidnum.htm There's an ongoing controversy between some folks in DHS who favor having no placards (to avoid giving the bad guys a hint) and folks in DOT etc who support local fire companies and other first responders who need to know what to use in a fire, etc. Date: 05/08/07 09:20 Re: Placards Author: sandmanre You can go here and order the ERG for $6.00. It's a pocket size book with all the listings for Hazardous materials.
