Western Railroad Discussion > Another Tehachapi Aerial.....Tunnel 2Date: 05/18/07 07:30 Another Tehachapi Aerial.....Tunnel 2 Author: cinder Southbound empty grain train loops through tunnel two between Caliente and Bealville, CA beginning its assault on the Tehachapis. The horseshoe curve down at Caliente and tunnel 1 are in the upper left of this picture. This is the second of five horseshoe curves necessary to get heavy tonnage up the mountain to the high desert. The "green" of the spring is disappearing, but notice the purple wildflowers on the hillside near tunnel 1.

While I've always enjoyed the loop in my visits over the years, I think the "ampitheater" of railroading that you can find between Caliente and Tunnel 5 is even more appealing...the opportunity to sit in one spot and follow a train over 45 minute of longer period as it traverses the topography of the area to gain elevation is like no other place I've been.
