Kodak Paper Slide Mounts
Author: tcnr

After all the discussion, I was surprised to find Costco with Kodak Processing worked out pretty good, state paper slide mounts in the remarks area. Also had some print film processed and put onto CDs, w/ 4x6 prints about 10 USD. Didn't expect perfection but it worked out OK.

Did you send in Kodak or Fuji slide film?
I didn't know you could specify paper or plastic! I'll have to ask for paper next time.
I though they did pretty good to. Thanks for the info.

I sent 2 rolls together, specified paper mounts on each envelope, got 2 back together - 1 in paper, 1 in plastic. Good luck...

From what I understand, this option is only available with E-6 film. Kodachrome is only available with cardboard mounts. I like the plastic mounts (they're Pakon) but there doesn't seem to be any frame numbers on them.

I've heard some Kodachrome has come back in plastic in error also. Not me, but others.

As for me, I put "Cardboard Mounts ONLY - Absolutely No Substitutions" in the instructions box. That way if they are low on supplies and are thinking of substituting plastic for cardboard, I make the order wait until they get cardboard in stock. The biggest delay due to this was 7 days - on top of the normal processing days.

A big issue caused by the introduction of plastic are the shorter supplies kept for both. Substitutions were common with my processing eariler, until I specified no substitutions.

Yikes! What lab are you using? I use the San Leandro (SF) lab and so far have had no trouble requesting and receiving either.

I read that the San Leandro lab closed. Is that not the case? If your mounts have "SA" stamped in or on them, I think the film is actually being processed at the Sacramento lab.

Right you are! The cardboard mounts do have SA stamped on them. However the plastic mounts only have the date. thanks for the update. I hadn't heard that the SF lab had closed.

I don't use Kodak now that the San Leandro lab is closed. I had a roll come back from Sacramento with scratches on some of the slides. They weren't linear like scratches caused by dust in the camera. Rather, there were little patches that looked like they had been rubbed back and forth with sandpaper.

A friend of mine had even worse luck with Sacramento. In addition to the scratches, one of his rolls of E-6 film came back in Kodachrome mounts. Another one came back in plastic mounts, even though he had specified cardboard. Yet another roll had the mounts upside down and backwards. I think the worst problem was the deliberate-looking dents he found on some of his slides.

We now send our film to Fuji in Phoenix. Haven't had any problems....

The test roll was E-6, Kodachrome goes in today.
I didn't notice any codes for which plant, I'm sure there is something printed on there. This works out better, for me, than mailers. Costco won't be putting the film thru the various detection systems that the USPS has to use these days. It is definitely Kodak processing.

Great. Sounds like my experience with Kodak's infamous "MN" lab. Worst lab on the planet, ever. I started using A&I until I found a store that sent their film to a different Kodak lab. So I'll hope for the best with the Sac lab. One thing at least, they're fast. I took two rolls of E-6 in Thursday and they were back in the store on Saturday.
