I found Waldo!! BBC News Container at BNSF Hobart Yard
Author: MrMRL

Photos taken today at 2:15 PM PST at BNSF's Hobart Yard in Los Angeles. I watched a Buggy truck park the NYKU 8210506 on the east end of one of our trailer lots between Tracks 6 & 7. Believe it or not, the container is viewable from the southbound lanes on the I-710 Freeway bridge that crosses over the east end of the yard. (see green bridge on right side of first photo).

More info on this container here... http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,1816843

It's appropriate that the box was drayed up from the ports to a downtown rail yard instead of using on-dock rail or near-dock rail. BNSF wants to do their own ICTF over by Watson but they have to try to get through a mine field of environmental opposition. Meanwhile, the southland breathes the exhaust from all the ancient polluting dray tractors. I hope BBC takes notice of that.

Best regards,

Rob L.

Seems as though the tracking mechanism must have been on the ship and not the container. BBC tracking web page still shows LA Harbor location.

Photos have been submitted. Apparently "The Box" arrived yesterday at the Port of LA from Shanghai, carrying digital scales & garden supplies bound for a Big Lots distribution center in New Jersey.

BBC News video of The Box arriving at the Port of LA yesterday...

Hmmm, digital scales and garden supplies, strange mix. And Big Lots chose to do mini-land-bridge instead of all-water. Are the digital scales one could buy at Big Lots all that expensive? I doubt it.

I think Big Lots could use some consulting.

One side note, after we passed the container It appeared that BNSF officials were coning off the area and a news crew arrived. Perhaps the BBC showed up to have an interview with the local BNSF Big-wigs on how wonderful containerized shipping is for the US, and how green, fuel efficient, and environmental, yada-yada...

Anyway, there may be a new "The Box" video on the BBC website in a day or so.

BNSF, most likely a Q-LACNYC train. BNSF From Los Angeles to Chicago, then either CSX or NS (don't know who takes over the final leg) to one of the major Intermodal hubs in the New Jersey/New York City area.

*update* There is a Q-LACNYC train scheduled for a 2215 departure tonight, and a Z-LACNYC for the morning shooter program tomorrow, so The Box may be on its way fairly soon.

Just think, if the NM Railrunner ran from Denver (Ft Collins) to Belen we could take a train trip to watch....

Robby- any idea when the morning Z-LACNYC is called for? If it doesn't leave tonight, I'd like to try nab it going through Esperanza.

The Q LACNYC goes to NS east of Chicago and is their "20G" I believe. I saw their 20G last August in PA and it looked just like the BNSF Q train and different from all the other NS intermodals.

The container has a GPS unit in it, but if there is a problem with it or it is buried deep in a ship they use the ship's tracking system. However, this container was visible on the deck of the ship so they would have used the container's GPS unit...that is if the battery was not dead or there wasn't another problem with it.

Of course, it could be the security situation that says they can't show where the container is for security reasons in case a terrorist targets it...

But most likely either something wrong with the tracking unit or it just hasn't updated yet.

Wouldn't the BBC news crew and reporters get hungry or need air after being trapped in the container for a long period of time ?
I would think an airplane ride would be better for them.

On History Channel last night they ran the Freight Train episode of Modern Marvels. One segment included a discussion of the Alameda Corridor and they claimed the Trench removes 11,000 trucks per day from the streets of SoCal. Sounds like there is more that needs to be done.

It removes a lot of drays from the 710 freeway, not so much from city streets.

My 1983 report was the first detailed proposal and analysis of what became known as the Alameda Corridor. Only took $2.4 billion and 19 years to get it done. But hey, that's not bad as public projects go.

The Corridor is only as useful as there are terminals to serve it. There still are a lot of drays up to Hobart that could go away if BNSF had their own ICTF. Moreover, there still are a lot of drays between the ports and the Inland Empire for the imports that are temporarily warehoused, sorted, sometimes value-added and then trans-loaded to domestic boxes for furtherance. The Corridor is not competitive for that stuff.

Best regards,

Rob L.
