Ventura, CA questions
Author: njmidland

I am going to be in Ventura, CA on business next week. Anything worth seeing for this Easterner? In addition to rails I would be interested in "great" hobby shops and antique shops that might have RR items.

Tim

P.S. I am more than happy to pass along tips if anyone comes east to watch the Alcos in action on the Delaware Lackawanna.

Head inland just a couple of miles to the Fillmore & Western: http://www.fwry.com/

The whole valley around Fillmore is a great piece of what Southern California used to look like: http://www.heritagevalley.net/index.htm

Check out the Sidecar Restaurant in Ventura. Great food and the restaurant incorporates an old heavyweight car: http://www.thesidecarrestaurant.com/

Have fun.

Head just north of town on the 101 freeway to the Pacific Coast Highway offramp. The highway closely follows the ex-SP Coast Line which hosts Amtrak's Pacific Surfliners and Coast Starlight, as well as infrequent UP freights. Several opportunities for photos with the Pacific Ocean in the background, or just a great place to watch the rail action and soak in the beach atmosphere.

For model RR items, look up Gold Coast Model RR Supply in Ventura. Last time I was there, they were in an industrial park on the east side of town. Their main stock-in-trade is G-scale, but they may have other sizes. Not the easiest place to find, but they have a lot of good stuff.

What the alligator lizards in the air? How much weed do I need to be on to understand the lyrics:

Chewing on a piece of grass
Walking down the road
Tell me, how long you gonna stay here, joe?
Some people say this town dont look good in snow
You dont care, I know

Ventura highway in the sunshine
Where the days are longer
The nights are stronger than moonshine
Youre gonna go I know

cause the free wind is blowin through your hair
And the days surround your daylight there
Seasons crying no despair
Alligator lizards in the air, in the air

Did di di di dit ...

Wishin on a falling star
Waitin for the early train
Sorry boy, but Ive been hit by purple rain
Aw, come on, joe, you can always
Change your name
Thanks a lot, son, just the same

Ventura highway in the sunshine
Where the days are longer
The nights are stronger than moonshine
Youre gonna go I know

cause the free wind is blowin through your hair
And the days surround your daylight there
Seasons crying no despair
Alligator lizards in the air, in the air

Did di di di dit ...
