Update on TO member cs16
Author: Steamjocky

Talked to my friend, and fellow TO member, cs16 tonight and he says he is doing much better. For those who didn't hear what happened, he had a heart attack a week ago Sunday while visiting some friends in the San Diego area. He ended up having a triple by-pass in a San Diego area hospital. He told me he will be off work (he's a signal maintainer for METROLINK in LA) for at least 6 weeks according to his doctor. He said he's too young (he's 52) to have by-pass surgery.

He still has his sense of humor as he told me to tell everybody on TO that he "ran through the switch but didn't back up." Typical Dale. Always keeping his sense of humor even when he feels like crap.

More info as I talk to him again later this week.

Thank you for the update. I sent him an email a few days ago and haven't heard back yet. I was starting to worry.

I think he told me he got home yesterday and he hasn't been on his computer as of yet. But don't worry, he'll be back on here soon.

Had my quad at 53! You never know when it will hit. This along with I lost two good friends this past year to heart attacks. One at 49 and the other at 42. Tell cs to hang in there. The first week or so are the hardest.

Glad to here cs16 is doing better. Always enjoyed his informative posts and humor! If Engineer Bill was still alive, I'd have him ring the get-well bell for Dale!

Two things we all can do to help prevent this.. starting walking or exercise for a half hour and watching what you eat.

How does the barley/hops/malt equation fit into this? My only vice. Still going strong at 49, will be 50 in Feb. Ben

Well, only a artery scan can tell how well your diet of malt, hops and grain are working. That's the shocking part

First off, thanks for all the kind words, yeah, melted the softplug and damn near put my fire out! As far as my diet goes, it wasn't the best, but fairly healthy, wife is a great cook. Lot's of veggies, chicken, fish, and sometimes beef. Lunch was sometimes fast food do to the nature of the job. Cholesterol was good, don't like beer. Both sides of the family have heart problems going way back, just luck of the draw. I go through 3 pair of boots a year walking, I know, it not the same kind of walking, but I'm not on my ass all day either. And, I hate McFibs.
I was having some chest pains, went to the hospital and blood pressure was through the roof. It took over 5 hours just to get things calmed down enough to get me to a room. Next day had a stress test ekg was normal but after injecting dye a taking a few pics, they noticed a blockage on the back side of the heart. No big deal- here comes the cath lab, do a rooter, a stint and on my way. While going through this procedure the blockage closed down, here comes a hear attack and I wake up some 11 hours later with a triple bypass, even the pics didn't show the whole problem.
So now it's lots of pain, discomfort, PT, and a slow process of getting back to semi normal. You can't be normal to work for a railroad! Hopefully in 8 weeks I will be back out there doing what I love.
Dale

Here's the bitch of the deal, Dale. If you have family history of heart problems or family history of high cholestrol, then your pre-disposed to have the same problems even if you are a good boy with diet and excerise. Those statin drugs do wonders to rotter-root the plaque out of the veins. My own personal physican and I are about the same age. Very laid back kinda guy, excerised like crazy. Took an artery scan and all his were nearly blocked at 52. Skinny, tall guy. Took the satin drug and his arteries are as clean a whistle. I've been on them for about 6 months and hoping to have cleaner arteries in this spring when I do another scan. Been on blood pressure med too. Not a guy with a belly. Eat well, excerise. I ride horses (jumping) 4-5 times a week for 1-2 hours. Lots of cardio here. Not talking cowboy jog.. 10-15 MPH gallops. Walk for 30-40 mins when I'm not on the horses. I'm pre-disposed too for heart dieease. Glad I have a doctor who cares.

Glad you made it through okay. Hope you get back to fixing those red signals sooner than 8 weeks.

This is a wakeup call to everyone on TO, 40+. Too many heart attacks at 50 and above. You can do something about it! Not too late.... Not an AMA plug.
