GP60 question
Author: ATSF90

Has anybody a list of the roads that own(ed) GP60s (east and west). I know only ATSF, SSW, SP, UP, DRGW... What are the differnces between the phases?

Thank you, ATSF 90

Phase 1: ATSF 1st 20 units; SP/SSW 1st 50 or so; TVA 1 unit.
Phase 2: ATSF, SP/SSW, DRGW, NS, CSX-I think they got 3 units from some lease co.ATSF/BNSF also has GP60M and GP60B units. I believe this is correct. Hope this helps.

The 3 demos (now on CSX), the first 20 ATSF, the first 20 SP and the first 15 SSW were phase I.

All the remainder were phase II.

The spotting feature for a phase 1 GP60 is a more-rounded dynamic brake box than the phase 2's, which are more squared-off. They changed the design for easier sheet metal work.

The Texas Mexican had a few Phase II's.

On that last one, are you thinking of the unit that went to
DOE's Savannah River Site? Did it eventually wind up on the TVA?

You can add to the list:

Norfolk Southern
Dupont Chemical (Savannah River Project)
Texas Mexican
EMD (ex-demos, now owned by CSX)

The GP60's with the earlier style Dynamic Brake Housing are:

EMD (CSX)
AT&SF (BNSF)
SP (and SSW)
Dupont Chemical

All others have the later style (Boxy) Dynamic Brake Housings, including AT&SF's GP60M's and GP60B's.

Hope this helps!

UP never had any GP-60's The one's they now have are the former SP/SSW units. MRC did an article in 93/94 sometime with scale drawings and rosters as of then.

If anyone remembers, the EMD Demos 5-7 were the only units that were built with the angled cab and the "SP" head-light arrangemet with the rotating amber beacon. It sure would have looked cool if the SP had ordered their units with those head-lights. Also, the first batch of SP GP60's came built the same specifications that Santa Fe had. Low Headlights in the nose with the Beacon on the fireman's side of the engine. These were SP 9600-9619. Then came SSW 9620-9714 with head-lights between the number boards with a beacon, then SP 9715-9769 with Speed Lettering and Ditch Lights, lastly came 9770-9794 with Speed Lettering, Ditch Lights, and black on white number boards like the SD70M's had. Also, of note, several of the ex SP 9600-9619 series that have been renumbered/repainted by UP have had thier head-lights relocated from the nose to up between the number boards. UP 5703 comes to mind.

Happy "foaming!"

T.C.

Evan Werkema, I stand corrected. That TVA unit is indeed the DOE's Savannah River Site unit. Thanks for pointing that out.
