Switching the mill, American style
Author: roustabout

Last night we (Portland & Western American Local) died at American half way through the two switches that they needed. The Albany Hauler crew, consisting of the remote operator/engineer, came out to patch us and finish our work. In spite of suffering through twelve and a tow, I drove out to the mill after getting home to see how our patch was progressing.

The last image is from the week before when we died just outside Albany, taken while waiting for the tow in.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the pictures. Looks like the mill is doing a good business.

Thanks for the pictures, roustabout. Remembered that I had taken some pictures at AmericanCan back in January 1977. Hope you don't mind me tagging onto your post with one. Does the UP still switch in there out of Halsey OR?

No problem, Todd. Nice picture of a time long gone.

UP no longer goes to the mill as they have red flags up just west of Powerline Rd due to problems with one or both bridges. And they are storing gondola cars east of Powerline. The red flag on the mill side of the line is out on Crook Drive. I was able to pull 21 boxcars past the chip spur and still had room for another ten or so one of the times that Cascade Pulp was having a loading frenzy.

Thanks for the information, roustabout. Didn't think the UP went in there anymore.
Glad to hear you are getting some cars out of that area.
