SD59MX and SD40-2 update photos N LIttle Rock, AR
Author: arkansasrailroader

Here is my photo update of Union Pacific's overhauled SD40-2's and SD59MX locomotives (former SD60M's) at Jenks Shops and yard area in North Little Rock, Arkansas on Tuesday, August 17, 2010. I also made my twice-monthly visit to the Union Pacific Company Store at the Jenks facility to get my bag of freshly popped popcorn, the best popcorn in the state.

The first photo is SD59MX 9905, and the SD40-2's are 1564, 1562, 1566, 1558, 1560, 1557, 1563, 1559, 1561, 1554.

Why are the rebuilt SD40-2's becoming hangar queens like the Bush SD70? Is there a reason they have not hit the road yet?

Wow! They really had to shoe-horn "UNION PACIFIC" on that car body... (Reminds me of how they had to do the ALCO C855's)
Great post! Thanks for the look.

The lettering looks great like that. The earlier Jenks repaints (prior to 2009) looked less than stellar with it dropped on the carbody and widely spaced. You are right, it looks like a C855 (and also an SD70M). I hope these units are more like the latter and not as short lived as the Alco.

Can anyone give me the reason UP has decided to rebuild the SD40-2 units? Are they going to be used on locals only or yard service? I can't wait to take four or five of them up Oxman around the horseshoe and Encina Hill in the eighth run like its 1975! Christmas in August

in these economic hard times, it was deteremined it was cheaper to make the 645 motors in these sd40-2's t3 compliant than buy 500 new engines.... no doubt these engines will see class 1 use in time... first major successful rebuild program of older power in quite some time on this large a scale too

Do the SD59M's still have the desktop control stands?
