Is it allowed to run at passenger speeds limited only by the freight gearing on BNSF's engines or 55MPH like all freight?

75 for AC traction units. 70 for DC. At least on the UP.

You can get those Dash 9s up to 75... they don't like it, but that is why you turn off the overspeed alarm...

Mr. MRL - not saying 75 is a good thing.

The speed of the train is dictated by several things.
1)the locomotives being used
2)RR rules governing the speed of pass/business trains
3)the Dispatcher.
On the Topeka Sub, BNSF typically runs their business/excursion trains btwn 55-60 mph.

On BNSF, max speed for freight engines is 70 mph. Passenger equipment is allowed to go the passenger speed limit. So, a business train with BNSF locomotives can go passenger speed, not to exceed 70 mph. Eventhough the freight speed limit on the San Diego Sub is 55 MPH, the officer special can go 70. It's a fun trip for a freight crew.
