Thanksgiving night photos UP2400
Author: Heymon

So I went out looking for parked trains after Thanksgiving Dinner, and found this SD60M parked at the head end of a ballast train (edit: location was just south of Mojave,CA). The UP2228 SD60 was the second unit. It was 25 degrees out with no gloves, so I did the best I could. Last year's attempt made the cover of the UP calendar, so I thought I'd keep practicing. Maybe not the calendar cover this year, but it was fun to try.

I would have posted this last night, but my hands were frozen for a while...

Nice shots...some time exposures and a flash or two?
Thanks for sharing.

Nice shots. Now I know parts of the equation - Planet Earth, North America - but I'm a little vague on LOCATION beyond that.

Sorry, I edited the post just now, but it was just south of Mojave. I think the siding is at Fleta? It's at Silver Queen Road and Sierra Hwy. Maybe someone can give the correct name if I am wrong.

This train was parked at Fleta last Friday (19). I think it is ballast for Mojave yard. Maybe it will move after the M/A time off.

Do these units have dynamics? No "blister" visible.

yes these units have dynamic brakes, they are located behind the cab. They were moved to this area on the SD50 and continued to be located here on the SD60 and SD70 types. However the dynamics remained in the traditional location mid-hood above the prime mover on the GP50 and GP60 types.

Thanks for the complement. I used the "paint with light" technique, which basically is just setting a long exposure (15-30 seconds) and then taking a 2 million candlepower spotlight and sweeping it back and forth across the subject while the shutter is open. It takes a few tries usually, since you will miss a spot but have no real way of knowing it until you see the shot on your camera. Thank God for digital cameras is all I can say.

Fleta sounds good for this locatiom.

I also remember Ansel as a station on the line south of Mojave.
Is there any road crossing there?
It was named after Ansel Adams famed Yosemite and Sierras photographer.
