Red cab lights in the latest Gevo motors?
Author: GP-38

As you other rails know, the latest Gevos have a cab dome light that turns red when the PCS opens. Do any of you know if it's possible to manually turn that light on red, or is it ONLY controlled by the PCS? It would be nice to have a light at night that's not as blinding as the new white LED's they use in there.

I have not seen any switches in the cab to be able to turn on the red light independently without placing the unit in emergency.

There is a switch that will turn the red light off.

By the way, it just turns on when the brake pipe presure is low (not just in emergency). If you put the automatic to supression or continuous service, the light comes on when the brake pipe gets down to around 20 psi.

It catches you off guard the first time it happens. "What the heck did I do now." There is a switch by the window heater, dynamics, etc..

You speak from experience. My first time I thought was it was some sort of fire alert thing, because the unit had just shut down for some kind of overheat code. I quickly looked out of both rear windows to see if the long hood was on fire! Then I seen that it was in a penalty app. I guess my GE toaster instincts had kicked in. A hot GE, then that red light equaled get out!

The first time I saw it, I thought I had to go to battle stations!

I had a kicker in a train. Conductor asked if we stepping into the red light district. Our conspiracy theory is the officials have visual confirmation your train went into emergency as you approach a banner. Or its the red light of shame. ;-)
