Western Railroad Discussion > Question re this PhotoDate: 02/08/11 18:14 Question re this Photo Author: schmo This is a photo of a consist of DM&E SD40-2s. The 40s are accelerating from a standing start like gang-busters through Clinton, IA, with a southbound manifest after letting a UP eastbound cross in front of them.
Question: What is kicking up the prodigious amount of dust you see alongside the locomotives? Is it the traction motor blowers? Something else? Any info is greatly appreciated! --Steve Schmollinger Date: 02/08/11 18:17 Re: Question re this Photo Author: kevink I've seen this where there is freshly dumped ballast that hasn't been rained on enough to wash the dust off.
