Question re this Photo
Author: schmo

This is a photo of a consist of DM&E SD40-2s. The 40s are accelerating from a standing start like gang-busters through Clinton, IA, with a southbound manifest after letting a UP eastbound cross in front of them.

Question: What is kicking up the prodigious amount of dust you see alongside the locomotives? Is it the traction motor blowers? Something else?

Any info is greatly appreciated!

I've seen this where there is freshly dumped ballast that hasn't been rained on enough to wash the dust off.

The TM blowers probably blowing dirt on/near/under the rails. Impressive shot!

possible that the vent on the air dryer is stuck open or a sander hose is loose.
