Daves photo without the tree.

Dave that tree made your photo. As you can see with out the tree it would just be a GE unit with some growth creeping up its side.

A few minutes of trolling Photobob's site turned up the following:

Evans right,
We can get some nice fall color in Dunsmuir.
Hard to shot that time of year, but when things
come together the results can be nice.
Dave.
BTW, thanks for taking that ugly tree out of my photo Morris! : )

Judging by the shape of the tree and the way the bark is peeling off, it looks as though it used to be a Digger pine (a.k.a. bull pine, gray pine). Now it's so much topsoil.

A Tree Grows in Walong

And in other parts of CA, AND, for a real treat, the cottonwoods in Cajon Creek get a lovely yellow in the fall, and a great light green in the spring. Sorry to hear of the death of your favorite tree, but are we sure it wasn't some fanatical foamer with a chainsaw, out to get the tree from blocking the view of the train? I HAVE know it to be done, sadly!

Yes, it was a Digger pine, one of the predominent types of trees in the Tehachapis. This tree shows up in 15,768 photos taken at the Loop, and 12,409 of those photos show the tree still alive.
