BNSF Font?
Author: kjangel

What is the font style (Arial, Courier, Times Roman, ..) for the large "BNSF" on the side of the long hood on the locomotives.

It looks like Clarendon Bold.

If Clarendon is the font you need, and you don't have it, email me at: tom@chrismonez.com and I'd be happy to mail it to you, I have a million of them. I'll be at the shop until late tonight, but leave me an e-mail and I'll send it when I get home. Also have railroad roman if you need it too. If anyone has the type of font UP uses, I'd sure appreciate a copy.

I don't think the BNSF lettering is any readily available font, like much railroad lettering. However, you can download a vector graphic of the lettering and logo at http://logo.nino.ru/main/?id=34312.

Like I said in that referenced thread in the previous post, I know of no exact match for the BNSF font among commercially produced fonts. Both the Santa Fe font and the derivative BNSF typeface seem to have been drawn up specially for the railroads use. The fonts I "authored" were merely an extrapolation from the few characters BNSF uses in their herald.

Please don't tell me its the "Cooper" font, because I know better. "Clarendon" may very well be the font I've seen that some suppliers to BNSF have used on their graphics on some items (like ice buckets and first aid kits on trains) but it is not the same as the lettering on the locomotives. (just look at the letter "F")

If anyone ever finds a font, other than the ones I wrote and have made available here for free, that matches the BNSF typeface please let me know!!

As for a computer font based on the UP lettering, its not available for free like mine, a guy named Ben Coifman authored and copyrighted a font called "CityOf" and offers it and other RR fonts for sale on his website: http://www.railfonts.com

I've been working also on a font that features sillouettes of modern frieght locomotives, Mr Coifman has some but they are passenger equipment or of old locos. Someday I plan to draw up something that matches the Santa Fe typeface better as well.

Again, here are the three variants I've come up with based on the two different BNSF locomotive lettering and numberings they'e used since the merger. The letters B N S F and most of the numbers came directly from scams of tracings I took off of decals inside the cabs of locomotives.
