An old warhorse comes to visit, a GP-30 Study
Author: CFWRRCEO

EMD's GP-30 has always evoked an image of a rugged junk-yard dog kind of locomotive. Its burley, yet has graceful lines and over the years wore some fine paint schemes. Eastern Idaho RR has two of them in the local vicinity. One is painted Orange and Black in EIRR's scheme and the other is Black and Yellow in the WATCO scheme. There is a 3rd unit that is all yellow that is an RCC unit. It sits in Rupert on a back track. This week, last weeks two GP-35's were replaced with a GP-30/GP-35 combo. In the dark on Monday morning I didn't realize they had been swapped out. At lunch the EIRR GP-30 surprise awaited me. So began a week long wait to catch this unit with its lights on and leading. That finally happened today but the previous 4 days were spent recording this unit in other ways. All the pics were taken in Jerome, Idaho during my lunch breaks. Enjoy! Bob

Caught it today leading while switching the siding that is the scene of yesterdays intentional derailment at the far end were it rejoins the main track.

The car rolled thru a derail. Intentional cause it did what was intended. Still don't know how the car got to that point.

Probably Conrail blue, note the rain gutters above the windows. Those mark it as former Reading I think.

It was originally Reading 5506. A long way from her origins . . .bet she'd have a few good stories to tell.

So has Eastern Idaho/WAMX been the longest owner of this GP30? Reading owned it for about 12-13 years and CR then owned it probably for about 10 (did they sell it in the late 80's?). Has it been in Idaho since CR sold it?

Great to see it still going strong in original form.

Hey guys, lets not forget the GP-35 behind the former Reading unit, that's none other than former Erie Lackawanna 2563 equally far from her former stomping grounds,so nice to see both of them up and running!!
