Wrecker at Grand Jct.
Author: retcsxcfm

My brother, who is also retired from CSX is in Grand Jct.Co.with my niece.
He said there is a wrecker at the UP (DRGW)yard. He wants to know if they
use it or is it out of service. If they use it,might be one of the few,if
any being used.
Anyone know?

there is a wreck train Denver, perhaps g jct too. tight canyons maybe helping save these outfits from the hulcher vultures. supposedly a large crane at burnham yard in Denver is going to the Chinese, as a crane, not scrap. There is a private owner trying to save some stuff, like cranes, so the G jct crane may be sold, but you would think the terrain should keep one active there.

SP invested in new wreck train for denver in the late eighties nineties, perhaps g jct got a new rebuilt outfit at the same time. the old wreck cars were neat drgw solarium obs, which migrated into private ownership.

Yes the wreck train in Junction is used.
The crane #028 is a 250 to Bucyrus-Erie built in 1942,
supposedly the first 250 ton, who knows.
Most of the relief cars have been updated with x SP & UP cars etc.

Back on Sept 25, 2007, the Union Pacific had a loaded coal train derail near Lynn on the Provo Sub in Price River Canyon, Utah. The Grand Junction wreck train, complete with crane 028, was dispatched to the scene. I don't think that the crane was actually used in the cleanup, but was on location nevertheless. Here are a couple of shots from Sept. 26.

Did the D&RGW have as many derailments on their lines as the UP seems to these days? Track issues??

I remember a few derailments on the DRGW when I worked on the BN.. It wasn't nice but I told my buddies over there "Better you than me..." I remember hearing about a derailment of a TOFC train near Dell where they had Nike shoes floating down the Colorado River. Not fun to recover.

DRGW had their share of them like any other road
