Is the dash 8 endangered?
Author: dgraves

Seems like the major railroads are getting rid of their dash 8's. Just wondering how long before they become extinct?

Seems like they will live on the CN and CSX for a while yet, but BNSF and UP are sure being quick to get rid of them. A handful of shortlines have bought some.

Well considering that most Dash 8's are quickly approaching their 30th birthday...

30th? Not quite. Most were built in the 1988-1993 time frame.

GE offers a kit to bring them into EPA Tier 0+ compliance, so that will be many a unit's saving grace.

I heard the Southwestern may be getting a couple to run on the CVR.

CSX, CN and NS are actively upgrading the C40-8/C40-8W/C40-8M fleets with split cooling and EFI so these units won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

While BNSF and UP have shed some B40-8, B40-8W, C40-8 and C40-8W's these have only been lease returns and not wholesale fleet retirements. UP still rosters all of its original C40-8's and C40-8W's aside from a few wreck victims, they only returned them former C&NW C40's when the lease expired. All of these units have been subsequently sold and will continue to see service.

I sure do hope they are endangered. If you ever rode on one you would understand why I say this.

Surely you're not suggesting that they are rattle-traps and ride rough enough to knock some teeth out. :-)

In all seriousness, the AT&SF C40-8Ws were in pretty rough shape, as far as the cabs go. And the B40-8Ws rode like a tank with square wheels... those and the GP60Ms are among the worst riding units I've ever encountered.

On my recent trip of the US, I only saw one active C40-8 and one active C40-8W, and a whole bunch of stored examples, some of which were beginning to look pretty sorry. The active units were the 9164 and 9374 in the Twin Cities
