Came across this article...are CP employees in the US on strike also?

An unfortunate situation regardless.

No, strike is in Canada, US employees of CP are NOT striking.

From the UTU:

It was a tough weekend all around. A UTU bus driver was murdered in Los Angeles and a brakeman lost a foot when he tripped near the right of way in Missouri.

Condolences to all.

How do you "trip" and lose your foot? I assume there is LOTS more to this story.

Apparently, the foot was not run over, but caught and twisted around. Severe enough damage to be amputated.

"On BNSF in Crystal City, Mo., some 40 miles south of St. Louis, brakeman Mike J. Bolen, 50, reportedly tripped while walking alongside eight cars being conventionally switched and suffered severe trauma to his right leg when struck – but not run over — by one of the moving cars. Hospital physicians reportedly later amputated the brakeman’s right foot. The FRA is also investigating this May 28 accident.
Bolen, of Jackson, Mo., had eight years’ service and is a member of UTU Local 947 (Chaffee, Mo.)"

The key term we heard around work earlier was a "severe spiral fracture".
