> any details on the derailment It happened on November 13, 1998 at approximately 8:10am. According to the FRA report (SC1198104): TRAIN Q-LACALT1-12B TRAVELING EAST AT APPROXIMATELY 31 MPH STRUCK TRAIN P-LACCHI1-12 DUE TO FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH RESTRICTED SPEED. Estimated speed of the P-LACCHI when it was rear-ended was 5 mph, and 3 of 69 cars went on the ground. The Q-LACALT (BNSF 741's train) derailed all three locomotives and 1 of 69 cars. No injuries or fatalities were reported. For more on the collision and some photos, see: http://www.qstation.org/mishap2/barstow.html This was the wreck that lead to the retirement of the first of Santa Fe's ex-Amtrak cowls, #5263, which was the third unit on the Q-LACALT. The two units ahead of it, one-year-old 741 and three-year-old SD75M 8226, were both patched up and returned to service in red and silver.
