An interesting looking unit for sure. A super mini-tunnel motor now. The Picture is by Carl Perelman The Description says: The latest test locomotive on the NYS&W is GMTX 499, a rebuilt GP15. Thought it was interesting. I've never seen one. Date: 10/13/12 21:56 Re: GMTX GP15-2 w/ Dynamic Brakes Author: jimbokat They were GP15T and C&O, (Chessie) had them. And they were turbocharged 8-645E3C engines.

CSX still rosters all 25 of its former Chessie GP15T's and the 3 Appalachicola Northern units operate on sister railroad Bay Line RR. These 28 units account for the entire GP15T production. The Chessie units were the only GP15 series locomotive to be built with dynamic brakes. GMTX #499 is now classed as a GP15-2. It is a former GP15-1 that was rebuilt with a full DASH 2 electrical system and had dynamic brakes added by VMV in Paducah,KY. Powered by a non-turbocharged 12-645 prime mover rated at 1500hp. Bill Miller Galt, ON Date: 10/14/12 08:39 Re: GMTX GP15-2 w/ Dynamic Brakes Author: PHall EMD did offer Dynamic Brakes on the GP15-1.
It just turned out that the only GP15's built with dynamics were the GP15T's. Date: 10/14/12 10:41 Re: GMTX GP15-2 w/ Dynamic Brakes Author: SteelValleyModels I always assumed that the GP15 series had Dash 2 electrical systems.
Anyone able to describe what they differed in electrical wise? Paul Date: 10/14/12 17:22 Re: GMTX GP15-2 w/ Dynamic Brakes Author: NebraskaZephyr The GP-15 was an attempt to spur the locomotive market by offering a "recycled" locomotive in a new frame/carbody.
EMD required a one-for-one first-generation loco trade-in on GP15 orders, as they fully intended to use rebuilt 567s, generators, traction motors, etc. in the GP15s. They actually thought the "old-school" circuitry in the electrical cabinet could be a selling point (simple to maintain, no computer skills necessary). That all went out the door with the GP15T, they were all-new from the ground up and have Dash-2 electricals. BTW, two distinctive spotting features that differentiate ALL GP15Ts from their cousins: The turbo stack and the "tunnel motor" radiator section is twice the size as that on a conventional GP15. CSX also has a group of MP15Ts, mechanically identical to a GP15T but in an end-cab switcher-style carbody. Seaboard System bought the only U.S. examples, don't know if EMD managed to sell any overseas. NZ Date: 10/14/12 19:54 Re: GMTX GP15-2 w/ Dynamic Brakes Author: SOO6617 NebraskaZephyr Wrote:

EMD was more than happy to accept an order without trade ins. The Mopac units were both mostly all new and some did not have trade ins. The trade in policy was designed to remove a GP7 or 9 from the market place as much as reduce cost of the end product. |
