Western Railroad Discussion > ? regarding BNSF lift bridge -Burlington ,IADate: 11/10/12 15:54 ? regarding BNSF lift bridge -Burlington ,IA Author: DKay I was wondering how the old pier that the swing span sat on ,was removed.Must have been a big job.
Regards,dK Date: 11/10/12 16:54 RE: ? regarding BNSF lift bridge -Burlington ,IA Author: 4400horsepower It was blown out using explosives, the new bridge was even damaged and had to be repaired before the rest of the pier could be blown out and removed. I believe when the new one was damaged it was out of service for a few hours.

It typically never gets much above 9.5 ft unless the Upper Mississippi River is in flood stage. |
