SP 7399
Author: SP373

Hi Everyone,

I'm fairly positive the top and upper body side of the SP 7399 in the daylight scheme
is dark gray, but are the trucks, fuel tank, and pilot gray as well?

Thanks,

SP373

Great...

Eventually there was "LOS ANGELES" lettering placed underneath the cab number

There was also LA "blank" 37 then the 7-83

Do you know what the black said, it looks like MO, but I'm not 100% sure.

Sorry about the confusion. I'm referring to lettering below LOS ANGELES

Here a shot of SP 7399 leading a train through Broadway in West Oakland on April 13, 1985. You can see the general location of the below the cab lettering. This was the OAWCY with 7399-9207-7323.

Strange that it seems to be the same numbers as the date to the right (7-83) but mixed up: "8 37" (?). The "M" makes me wonder if it's a designation of servicing or rebuild level at Los Angeles Taylor shops. Maybe there was an error in stenciling here, as well.

I sure there are some SP diesel experts that will be able to answer your question, but perhaps this crop from a LA based SD40T-2 will help sort out the format of the lettering.

The "M" codes date from the early to mid-80s and signified the type, location, and date of the maintenance.

I don't know what all the maintenace codes mean, but I thought they were usually the letter "M" followed by two numbers. It is strange that the 7399 appears to have three numbers following the "M".
