I was told the record was somewhere around 8900 ties in one day and there is like 2900 in a mile.

Amtrak's TLM can produce about between a mile/ mile and a 1/2 in clean ballast a soft subroadbed ... it all depended on the roadbed and the how easy or difficult it was for the plow to get through ... Amtrak's TLM was powered by the power unit for the TLM ... if they ran into some hard subroadbed difficulties they'd attach the power slug unit ... other than that it all depended on the time it took for the the gantries to feed the feeder belt for the layer and how many tie cars were on the train and of course mechanical down time ... one of the big no no's was somebody pushing the panic button to stop the unit ... if you did you'd better have a damn good excuse
