Railroad's Paint Scheme

When a railroad company sell there old locomotives or send them back to the leaser , do the new owners have to get permission if they want to keep using that railroads paint scheme. ( Regional, Shortlines, Larry's)

I have seen a lot of sold loco's the last year,all of them had the old rr colors still. The BNSF had the logo taken off with CN on them. The UP had a black line through them. And i've even
seen some old BN SD40's with lease company;s on the still green and black. Steve(up6553)

The only proprietary item on a locomotive is the reporting mark.

The only proprietary item(s) on a locomotive are the logo (emblem) and name, which are service marks, and therefore subject to different laws than copyrights. Any proprietaryship for the reporting marks belongs to the AAR.

I remember when the A&O got UP sd50's and put A&O on the UP logo ,UP made them take it off. Randy
