Hummmm makes me think... y'all were talking yesterday how he hadn't been seen, and he goes out and about today, I suspect he must either be a memeber or a lurker here on TO.

Or someone with a lot of vacation time to use up

He obviously either reads TO or someone tells him when his name comes up here. I'm sure he gets a big kick out of it, with a large ego like that. Some people are just naturally grumpy and power hungry. It's a bad combo, and it sounds like he has both traits.

Hmmm, I wonder if he has a brother who works the BNSF Flagstaff local? Sure sound like birds of a feather, eh? http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,2931100

A little off topic but ever since Warren Buffett bought BNSF, I've seen changes in employee morale, and not for the better. Only time I was called in so far was by a BNSF crew near Cajon Pass. I was a safe distance from the tracks, in middle of a chase, in the process of moving to the next location, so what the ?

When SCUfoamer, Maxwell, and I were taking photos of a BNSF manifest near Riverbank recently, the conductor came out and nicely asked us to leave. It was the first time I've seen an employee come out of the cab, walk the ballast, and go through the trouble to simply ask us to leave. He was nice, but it made us wonder about the rumors we heard of BNSF managers giving out "directives" to report and call in railfans?

Lately, the UP crews have been great, giving me lots of "highball the foamer," waves, smiles, and all sorts of cool stuff.

Morale may or may not be changing, but you can't blame Warren Buffett. He buys companies that he thinks are long term good performers and well managed, and does not meddle unless things go seriously wrong. He has no interest in the day to day operation and probably talks to the BNSF CEO about twice a year.

Warren Buffet is a closet railfan, a high performing Asbergers as are many railfans, and he bought Matt Rose, not just the BNSF. He has chosen his successors, two of them, to split the management of Berkshire Hathaway between two people, and Matt Rose will be one of them. Count on it.
C.
PS-- I am a stockholder and read his annual reports. Fun stuff.

Maybe Warren wants all the photo locations to himself????

Although it's probably gotten worse, I still always point out the first time I was yelled at that railroad photography was illegal and if I didn't leave they were going to send me to jail was 1976 in Hoboken NJ (on a public platform).

I received single-finger salutes and angry shakes of the head many times in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

It's about angry individuals and nothing else.

I elected to convert all my shares to BRKB, and yup, his annual reports are fun to read. However, no hero worship from me, and that's the last thing he would want a smart investor to do. He probably bought BNSF for the cash it generates, especially since all the dividends the company used to pay to Wall St. sheeps now go straight to Berkshire Hathway coffers, and I've posted this opinion on here before.

He being a railfan isn't too relevant to what's happening trackside, in my opinion. I know many great BNSF employees. That doesn't change what I have been observing trackside in recent years.

Yeah, with the rude remarks and all that, that sucks in my book! I for one never had much problems myself railfanning out here on the transcon!

I know guys who are okay with photographers trackside or encourage it, and I know some who would call photographers in simply because they get a kick out of ( and they actually do think it's funny ) making life harder for the photographer . Sadly , some railroaders don't know how to mind their own business . Appearently foaming is bad , but spending that money to go hunt animals or spending your life memorizing football players is normal behavior. I believe that everyone should get to do what they enjoy and if someone doesn't like it, ignore it.

My advice is , ignore the negative ones. If you are on public property and and making your notions as a photographer clear then let them call you in and defend yourself when the cops get there . When I get the one finger salute , I always find it polite to return the salute full force ( can't leave someone hanging ) ;)

I may have seen Rusty. I saw the this Union Pacific matenance of way truck pass the historical markers on woodford rd. He drove
by twice, when I was there. I was more than 20 feet away from the tracks. I found that information under 369-I of the California
Penal code.

This is very well stated...better than I could have done.

There is subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) pressure in society among males to be "one of the guys": gotta have a truck, gotta fish and/or hunt, gotta hang out at the bar, ect. I'm sick of it. Just because the majority of people may do the same things doesn't make them right and it doesn't give them the right to bash others either. And, from what I've seen since turning eighteen 35 years ago, most of these people either never bother to look in the mirror or spend too much time in front of it.

I'm a huge believer in volunteerism, whether it be helping dish out Thanksgiving dinners to the homeless, helping out at the local animal shelter (that WILL open some eyes), helping in schools, ect. It also goes along way to seeing people and animals in a different light. There is way too much of this "if you're not with us you're against us" crap these days (with politicians leading the way)...

That has been my impression too, despite many ex-SP employees working that have nothing good to say about UP. I've noticed the UP crews tend to be older and are probably used to seeing railfans trackside. Plus I get the impression there are more closet railfans working for UP than BNSF, especially in the western states.
