Thoroughbreds in the desert
Author: britchie

As part of our winter sojourn in the warmer climates of the U.S. we spend some time around Yuma, AZ. The sunset Route has a constant parade of traffic most being powered by UP's finest & with some patched SP units & CSX stuff. Today it was an NS kind of dat at Olgiby, AZ with 3 NS units in the hole for e/b freights & an inspection train. Had a good chat with the conductor while he was PK'ing the traffic. They would be in west Colton tonight & he doubted if they could do Beaumont at over 15 mph with this train.
The inspection train had no lack of power but it was making good time.Temperature hit a high of 60 F here & is a little cooler than I like.

Great location to hang out and explore, a very cool place to be and glad the UP is even running a few trains for you.

I-10 is in the proximity of the Sunset Route across New Mexico and Arizona. For the past 4 years, my wife and I travelled From Deming, New Mexico all across to Casa Grande, Arizona and the number of trains along that route is nothing less than sensational. We also stopped a few times and were treated with about as many as BNSF runs across the Seligman subdivision across Northern Arizona.

These excellent pictures bring back a lot of memories.

I enjoy that route between Yuma & Gila Bend when I travel across Arizona.
The other things I notice, besides trains, are the number of Canadian licence plates in the Yuma area. Mr. Ritchie is not alone. Lots of B.C., Alberta and Sask. people there. Even better that some are railfans!

Yes, but being a railfan I am definitely the odd man out.
