Are the very photogenic '30s-era concrete LA River bridges protected by California, federally?
I hope so.
They have appeared often in movies, commercials, on TV.

I've heard talk of replacing them due to structural issues.

I don't know what kind of protection they have, but the 6th Street Bridge (in the picture, and perhaps the most iconic) is not long for this world. It is being replaced with a new bridge in the next two years.

Let me preface these remarks with the statement that I am by no means a structural engineer. As far as the bridges -- I would strongly suspect (hope) that safety would trump history given CA's propensity to shake, rattle and roll! If a way could be found to retrofit the bridges to meet earthquake standards without breaking the bank, then -- wonderful. However, given current fiscal issues, I doubt that that will happen. But they are beautiful bridges!

Domestic stacks coming in to East LA the long way around. Or perhaps it's the Portland train coming in, but it seems a little long for that.

Best regards,

It came off the Alhambra Sub. In fact, I didn't know where the power was at first when I saw it stopped from the freeway. I headed east looking for the power, only to see it start to move west. Just got there in time to beat it.

Thanks. My first guess was right.

Just the 6th Street/Whittier Blvd bridge is going, it can't be saved due to bad concrete mixture used in it's construction...

The rest are protected...

Nice photo, and good to see the graffiti being tackled on the "river"...
