Western Railroad Discussion > gotta thank a maintainerDate: 04/06/13 18:35 gotta thank a maintainer Author: tc WAs out chasing trains today following a N/B that was going pretty good ,hard to stay up with, decided to get in front for a couple of nose shots then heard on the scanner he had a stop indication out of no where so he stopped well I decided to see what was causing the color, well it turned out a train heading S/B entered the same block at the other end, in front of the N/B , there was still alot of room for stopping but had the N/B gone past the signal or it had not turned red it could of been very tragic. I feel bad for the crew that entered the main but I was glad it wasn't a head on. So glad the signals were maintained well and with safety in mind. I chose not to add the pics for the sake of the crew.

Someone's taking a month vacation, the investigation is just to determine who. Trains do not spontaneously enter the main track without authority, someone made a mistake which caused it to. Simple fact is whoever it is is going to serve some time off. Date: 04/06/13 22:08 Re: gotta thank a maintainer Author: Jaanfo http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,3041700
Same incident? In any cases, there's a signal maintainer you can thank... Date: 04/06/13 22:17 Re: gotta thank a maintainer Author: skinem Jaanfo Wrote:

You'd think...but there have been many many times the results of investigations showed what may have appeared 'obvious' wasn't. That's what they're (investigations) for among other things. And in these strange days an authority violation no longer always means being pulled out of service. Walk 20' instead of 25' around the end of a cut's damned near a hanging offense. Three miles outside your warrant?... No worries...no time and we'll give ya a nice job teaching safety classes. Strange days indeed. From what was observed here, you can't draw conculsions from; sometimes things aren't always what they seem to be. The position of the previous signals (for both trains) would be one that I'd want to know. I don't know if this line is one that requires signals to be called out on the radio. From 'sources', the engr called the signal at crest and then fell asleep. OOPS! Now I ask, what was the conductor doing, or not doing at the time? He was in run 8 up to crest. I would have loved to known what throttle position he was in when he when flying out the other end of the siding. Bet the rock and roll from whipping through the switch woke him up. It's a pretty good downgrade out of crest so I imagine he had a good roll on it, especially to get 53 cars out the end, he only had 15 and the dpu behind the switch. We dodged a great big bullet, as the z train was just coming up to the intermediate east of quartz when it dropped in his face. The 2 trains were about a half mile apart when rocky finally stopped. So when I got done with downloads and watching the switch repair at 130a, went down to branford where the dump truck got plowed and took over for the San Gabriel Supervisor on the knockdown. Picked up a memento from that mess, the number board from the cabcar, 651. Too bad it wasn't 666 lol |
