UP adding some power in Glenwood Springs and some quest
Author: r3dw0rm

Hello everyone. This is my first first post as I'm a new member and as well as a new(ish) railfan. Always loved trains but never had the time or the motivation before.

Here is the sequence:

1. UP 5614 and 7950 pull a coal drag into the Glenwood Springs yard to cut in some more power before presumably heading for the moffat line.

2. UP 7967 5490 6806 are cut in as DPUs in the middle of the train.

3. UP 6475 is the DPU on the end

I was listening to my scanner as they were cutting in this extra power and it sounded like they were having trouble getting the mid train units going. They would start them up and everything would immediately go to an alarm. Is it normal a pain to add DPUs mid train like this?

I'm also wondering how you find out if a train is what you think it is?
for instance I saw this:

4: BNSF Mixed freight comming out of Glenwood Canyon

5: And exiting Gleenwood springs through west canyon.

I'm think this is the Denver-Stockton Manifest but I'm not sure. How would I figure that out? Thanks for looking! Any critiques corrections or tips would be appreciated!

In answer to your question, there are a couple ways to figure out what the symbol of the train is. (1) know someone within BNSF or UP that can give you the symbol (2) memorize what cars are on which trains and around what time they usually pass by, or (3) crews occasionally say the symbol on the radio. The BNSF train in question is most likely the H-LINPVO (Lincoln, NE - Provo, UT). I think it is this train because I know BNSF stopped running the H-DENSTO (Denver - Stockton) quite some time ago, and now a days, their westbound mixed freight on the Moffat Route is the H-LINPVO

Thanks for the reply!

In regards to number 2: Once I have memorized the cars and times is there a place I can look that stuff up?

I didn't realize I was working with dated information on H-DENSTO appreciate the correction!

Unfortunately, there really isn't a place where you can find the symbol for the train you saw. Your best option (aside from contacting an employee or asking one of the fine gentlemen on this website) is finding pictures, descriptions, or notes about the train matching the one you saw.

YOu can get a partial hint from the coal load. This one appears to be a Bowie Resources train. Loads East of Paonia, an easy run over McClure Pass from Glenwood! Lower peacked loads with heavy toward the front are likely West Elk and the reverse of that are Sommersets. Savage seem to be a lower load and more even and tend to three lead units.

Nice first post!

Adding mid-train DPU is normally trouble free, although it seems when it is hotter or colder than normal calls to the help desk in Omahaha are more frequent.

Oh, and it's either West Glenwood Canyon or South Canyon for the stretch between West Glenwood and Chacra (Canyon Creek on I-70). There seems to be no local consensus, I've been trying to figure out which is right since we moved to the area the first time in 1974. Technically South Canyon is only the canyon that rises south from the Colorado River from where the South Canyon interchange is on I-70, but my research suggests the argument started long before I-70 was built.

Wow thanks for the detail! I never thought about looking at how the cars are loaded. I might try to get over McClure sometime soon and catch some loading action at Oxbow in Somerset. Do you know if they have any sort of schedule for when they load?

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!

Last I had heard, the North Fork Sub is loading a little over 2 trains per day.

West Elk is trying to increase loadings.

Somerset is in the process of relocating their longwall. Per the Grand Junction newspaper, they have had some issues in the mine and had to shut down operations. They are currently mining in other areas via a continuous miner. Most of this coal is going west for export. If all goes well, the longwall relocation will be completed before the end of the year.

Bowie should be coming back up soon. The story I was told is they are completing a longwall move and hope to be shipping coal this month.

Wondered why coal through Silt had been really slow lately -- thanks, Todd!
