Witnessing A Crossing Accident In Tulsa, OK
Author: BNSF-6432

Today after school me and my dad decided at the last second to turn back around and head for Trenton Ave for a westbound that checked into Cherokee Yard. It happened to be a KCKTUL with a high-wide making it unable to meet anything between downtown Tulsa and the yard. He made it in and a TULNTW was on his way out from the yard once the KCKTUL entered (Power on the KCK was a BNSF dash9, UP SD70 and a Santa Fe painted GP60)
About the same time the KCKTUL was entering the yard, a LINTUL checked into the yard. We figured we would have a meet near us between the LIN and NTW. Anyway, he made it across Trenton rolling at a pretty good speed (20-25mph) but about 50 cars or so back a southbound car flew down the neighborhood street through the gate and right into the side of the LINTUL striking a boxcar. The car was doing something around 30-40mph. Thankfully, the car struck the side of the car, not in between two cars so it was not drug down the tracks. However, the car hit the boxcar and bounced off a tank car with the driver's side door to the train while fouling main 1 (the track TULNTW was leaving on, making his way up any minute) We dialed 911 and at the same time there was nearby residents running up to the car busting out windows in attempt to free the driver on the opposite side of the car. They were able to drag her out quickly and one rushed her to a hospital before any responders were present. At about the same time, TULNTW was blowing at the next crossing about half a mile down.
Thankfully, the NTW was coming uphill with plenty of vision. While the eastbound NTW was still moving, people at the crossing were able to chain the car up and fling it off the tracks with a pickup truck (yeah, this is Oklahoma)
Without having to plug the train, the NTW came to a stop just short of the crossing. The conductor got on the ground and we explained what happened to him and the fire department. In the meantime, everyone was waiting on the police to arrive. Also, one of the two special agents in the state of Oklahoma was making his way from in town. The car was completely destroyed, despite the two busted windows. Miscellaneous car parts were scattered along the tracks and crossing. The gate she drove through wasn't broke, it only bended as she plowed through it. We made our statements to the police and the special agent, who was just there to assist the police if need be. After that we got off subject and chatted with the S.A. and conductor about a few former local employees before taking off.
Unfortunately there were no pictures as I had no camera, but just another reason to NOT drive distracted

Not sure, but when we walked up to the car after the eastbound came to a stop there was a pretty strong smell of weed. Its unknown what she was doing though

The news doesn't shock me anymore. All the surprises are done these days.

Maybe she was slightly 'bended' too.

Maybe she was leading the police on a high-speed chase like this woman in Utah:

Trains have a way of putting a quick halt to high-speed police chases!
