Katy unit and other assorted stuff today
Author: oyw

Here we go again...another pursuit of a UP Heritage unit. After finding out the UP 1988 Katy unit was through Victorville (SoCal) before sunrise heading for North Platte and since my wife was still fast asleep, I decided to gamble and drive 90 miles in an attempt to beat the train to Yermo. I got lucky when I saw the train crawling through Barstow yard from the freeway, 1988 turned out to be the rear DPU but facing the right way so I waited at the UP crossing in Daggett.

1) UP 7487 leads the MWCNP away from the BNSF Needles Sub and onto UP trackage at Daggett just after 8:45AM.

2) The 1988 going away. The train will be stopping soon for a crew change in Yermo, seen in the distance.

3) An overall shot of the train stopped.

2 more parts to follow...

4) No caption needed here.

5) One final angle before the train departed.

6) Stealing a page from friend DRGW's fine post yesterday, SWPC 415 arriving at the plant in Victorville. Coincidentally, I passed the train on its run to the mine shortly before 8AM as I was on my way for the Katy unit, then happened across it on its return trip at 10:30.

7) After a call from friend FCP901(thanks!), who spotted an eastbound BNSF stack train with a very clean coal GE leading up Cajon. I made a mad dash and barely caught up to him at the overlook west of Summit.

8) A roster of BNSF ES44AC 6382 normally assigned to coal service, not sure if it has been repainted of just cleaned up really good?

9) I heard a BNSF local talking on the San Gabriel Sub as I headed home. I checked the spur in Rancho Cucamonga and found the 1st Kaiser switching with a trio of GP60M's just north of 4th St.

If you haven't figured it out by now, I'm a sucker for the UP Heritage units. Thanks for letting me share my follies from today, and Happy New Year to you all.

OYW

Great shots on the 1988, you really lucked out with those shadows! Surprised to see you getting excited about an Orange GE:}

You sure made the best out of a fine So. Cal. morning!
