50 years of change
Author: photobob

I took a photo this afternoon of the Coast Starlight leaving Klamath Falls about eight hours late. It brought to mind a photo I took at Suisun-Fairfield about fifty years ago of Alco PA's leading the Cascade. Which do you prefer?

Very cool. I love before and after pics. If there had not been a following out of the relatives in 1964 I would have been sent to Oregon from Los Angeles for the summer on that train, bummer...

Both are nice photos, but -- #2, without a doubt!
What's not to like in your photo of PAs powering
the Cascade?

Uncanny similarities of angles and elements: classic Photobob. Otherwise, two different worlds. I'll take the old one too, big shocker there...

Love those before and after shots.
Great catch at just the right time!
(So much for "Tier 4" emissions...)

Excellent composition, Bob! And a fine example of the very best (photo #2) and worst of passenger locomotive design.

SP Alco PAs are the best. Since the Cascade was a night train, how late was it out of K. Falls?

Not as easy a question as I first thought....From a visual point of view, pic 2 wins the day....but how about from a rider point of view....

By the time the SP picture was taken, what was the condition of the train interiors and equipment? Since the Starlight on Amtrak appears to be one of their "better" trains, could a rider have preferred it? Inquiring minds want to know...

Even being the kid that I am, I have to go with pic #2. Looks like the P42 in the first pic is giving its best PA impression though! Are we sure they don't have ALCo prime movers in them?

I'll take door #1. Alco PA's were the ugliest locomotives ever made.

Awesome shots Bob. Looks like those P42s were trying to match the smoky ALCos leaving the station. Still, I'll stick with the PAs :-)

Thanks for sharing,
