UP pulling older GE's out of storage
Author: bradleymckay

I have received a report that UP is reactivating many of the older GE's (Dash 8's?) that have been in storage. Details are vague but it wouldn't be surprising considering the number of UP locomotives on BNSF (plus locomotives going off line to CSX and NS). If anybody has more details I'd be interested in learning more facts, as the facts become available.

TIA

Allen

settling up the horsepower hours owed for 2013 will be a big deal for some lines, that's for sure.

Here in the east, you're as likely to see BNSF or UP as the home railroad's power. Especially on oil or ethanol trains.

For the early part of Nov. Dec, I've seen 9605,9643,9714 and 9429 in service that have been running up and down the valley...

There have been several threads mentioning this over the last month or two. All of the older GE's reactivated so far have been C40-8W's and C41-8W's in the UP 9356-9559 range, and approximately half of them are now back in service. None of the standard cab C40-8's have been put back in service at this time.

Back in November of last year I had a power move from Dolores to L.A. which included the 9520, 9489, 9546, and the 9467. Not sure what happened to them since then.-BMT

I have been seeing several of them going thru the servicing facility in N. Platte. ( And the same SD60/43's are still waiting, also in N. Platte, on a decision of what to do next).

9520 - Back at work. In Texas now.
9489 - Back at work. At North Platte, NE now.
9546 - In the shop at LA. Still being worked on for a return to service.
9467 - Back at work. At North Platte, NE now.

9476 headed to Brooklyn today. As stated earlier all active ones are wide noses.

I don't know the specifics but I have been seeing old UP power going to Canada lately. Lots of DC units that I have not seen on the Washy in years. I think things are getting busier and the CP has been loaning engines to the BNSF so UP is supplying more CANAM power.

Just saw UP 9288 and 9292 in the Council Bluffs engine terminal. No lettering painted out. Auction or lease? These were from a deadline of 16 (now 14) GE's south of the Bluffs engine facility.
