Western Railroad Discussion > Feds propose fines on oil by rail shippersDate: 02/05/14 07:04 Feds propose fines on oil by rail shippers Author: Lackawanna484 The Wall Street Journal reports that Hess, Marathon and other oil companies may face fines from federal officials for failing to properly classify oil prepared for rail delivery.
The article notes that 11 of 18 samples bound for tank cars were not properly classified. The proper classification of oil by volatility has been an issue with inspections following several recent fires. >>This finding is similar to what Canadian officials discovered after the fatal derailment in Quebec. Last year, they said crude from North Dakota was misclassified and they couldn't find proof that it had ever been tested. The fines are meant to "send a message to everyone involved in the shipment of crude oil: You must test and classify this material properly, if you want to use our transportation system to ship it," Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said.<< (subscription site, widely available on the internet) http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304626804579363291090361518 Date: 02/05/14 09:08 Re: Feds propose fines on oil by rail shippers Author: ATSF100WEST About time.
