The Wall Street Journal reports that Hess, Marathon and other oil companies may face fines from federal officials for failing to properly classify oil prepared for rail delivery.

The article notes that 11 of 18 samples bound for tank cars were not properly classified. The proper classification of oil by volatility has been an issue with inspections following several recent fires.

>>This finding is similar to what Canadian officials discovered after the fatal derailment in Quebec. Last year, they said crude from North Dakota was misclassified and they couldn't find proof that it had ever been tested.

The fines are meant to "send a message to everyone involved in the shipment of crude oil: You must test and classify this material properly, if you want to use our transportation system to ship it," Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said.<<

Relax folks the total fine for all 3 companies was around $33,000.00 They can take that out of the janitorial petty cash box.

I guess we wouldn't want any of those onerous federal regulations to get in the way of the boom. After all big business is always telling us how it is in their best interest to be self regulating.
