Western Railroad Discussion > The Perfect Pit-stop!Date: 03/08/14 07:29 The Perfect Pit-stop! Author: santafe199 For as long as there have been railfans out on the chase, there have been railfan “pit stops”. I was up in Nebraska last fall being escorted around Husker Nation by Mr. Tom Jurgens & Co. We had stopped in Blair, NE for gas & drink re-fills. I heard a horn so I lagged outside and got this urban shot with a Dairy Queen posed in the forefront. I thought: “What a great pit stop this would be for railfans!” Fountain drinks or shakes, or ice cream in multiple forms, it’s all there! Even the burgers are pretty decent. And right next to a busy mainline.
Oh no... I’m getting’ one of those sweet tooth things! Yep, I’m gonna have to go get one of the Blizzards real soon! (yummy) 1. UP 7296 leads a westbound train behind the Dairy Queen in Blair, NE on September 13, 2013. Two scoops, please! Lance Garrels santafe199 Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/08/14 07:30 by santafe199. Date: 03/08/14 07:57 Re: The Perfect Pit-stop! Author: Bob3985 Too bad they don't have a drive thru window on trackside for the crews. But then the dispatcher would only complain about the delays. I bet occasionally they do get a rail or two stop in though.
Reminds me of our trips to Denver with the steam locos. I would always race to Eaton. Colorado to grab a root beer float from the A&W on the north side along US 85. So when Steve and Lynn would pass I would be standing out front enjoying the scrumptious flavor of the float all the time getting shaking fists out of the cab window. So one trip I bought a bunch of Root Beer shakes and told the gals in the A&W "Watch this!". I headed over to the tracks and the 844 came to a nice stop as I handed them up to the steam and pilot crew. They were amazed that they had just served several guys on a steam locomotive. All I care is they have Diet Mountaindew and a place to get rid of some. Steve Date: 03/08/14 08:51 Re: The Perfect Pit-stop! Author: hartland DQ and railfanning - what could be better?

For trackside views out the front of a DQ, I think the Bonner Springs KS location would win. Sneebly Date: 03/08/14 10:39 Re: The Perfect Pit-stop! Author: mp12point7 There's a DQ at Nahunta, GA, right at the north end of a pass track. For years I dreamed of getting a chance to stop there, but alas, Amtrak was never put in there. Then, on one of my last trips before retirement, the dispatcher sent #92 into the siding and we were there just long enough for a wonderful fireman who worked with me sometimes to run over and bring back treats. Thanks Cliff!

After seeing Bob3985's post, I think the back of that DQ is close enough they almost could have a drive thru! |
