The white light when illuminated conveyed permission to proceed by the signal without stopping and up the siding.Basically used if any switching had to be done at the north end of Dunsmuir yard which is accessed by the hand throw switch in the foreground.

While on the subject of those beautiful old searchlights....has anyone heard or know of signal work being done farther north on the Cascade Sub of the UP? Has that work been started or now completed?
