Both UP 4014s Out and About Today!
Author: UPNW2-1083

My buddy SPmarc, took his lunch break at West Colton yard this afternoon and happened to come across both UP 4014s being moved into position for the start of the grand move to Cheyenne this Monday. He sent these to me via cell phone so I'm not too sure how they will come out.
Marc had to get back to work, so I'm posting these for him.Another friend of mine, Chris, was the hoghead on this move.-BMT

To bad the 6936 got sick. What will be the top speed of this train?

20 MPH from what the crew told me last night.-BMT

How will the 4884 be controlled? Locotrol, very long MU cables, or a separate engineer/conductor??

There will be two crews, one on each engine. The (diesel) 4014 can handle the train by itself but they are erring on the side or safety by having the 4884 along with it. Makes for a nice set of bookends for the "Big Boy" though.-BMT

SD70Ms aren't DP equipped, so no locotrol

Didn't know the 6936 was sick? It went to North Platte for some work and spent about a week there about a month ago. It is now back in Cheyenne. Does it have a mechanical defect on it again?

BOTH UP 4014's????? There is only one UP4014, and that is currently a SD70M.
Now there is a UPP 4014 which just happens to be a non-serviceable steam locomotive.
The FRA kinda frowns on two pieces of equipment having the same reporting marks, messes with their computers...

Nice photos for quick grab shots! Classy job on the part of U.P., i.e., #4884 and #4014. And, the engine looks good! Please, U.P. don't ruin it later when she gets running with signs, flags and pizza pie plates.

They are going to use 16 crews to get that thing home?

Seems like it should only take 5 or 6.

Wow.

Hmmm. . . let's see.

Distance from West Colton to Cheyenne. . . .1060 miles -- at least by highway.

At 20 mph. . . . 53 hours.

traveling eight hours a day. . . . seven days of travel;

two crews per day == 14 crews.

Sounds about right. . .

Not at all.

If they ran it DPU, they would need 7 crews. And if they ran it
according to crew districts and not the several short hops in the
schedule (Salt Lake to Ogden and Laramie to Cheyenne) they could
do it with 5 or 6.

What, you don't like red air hoses?
