Western Railroad Discussion > GP20's are cool...Date: 04/23/14 19:51 GP20's are cool... Author: sp8192 That is all. They are cool. Here WAMX 2005 (ex ATSF 3049, ex MWLX 2034) hangs out while waiting for a couple to get by before he hits the mainline. UP 1996 makes an appearance also....taken at KC Union Station.

;^) Date: 04/23/14 20:10 Re: GP20's are cool... Author: mojaveflyer I agree with the thought about the GP-20s! I assume this is a recent photo and I'm surprised that it still appears to have a turbocharger. Haven't most of the GP-20s had their turbos removed like the SP did?

This one is very much still turbocharged and is fun to have in your consist as a railfan, but I'm not a fan of running this one. Transitions are goofy on it. However that P3 horn sounds awesome, one of the best sounding ones I've ever heard. I wondered how I missed UP 1996 yesterday but it showed up right after I left (I was there maybe 20 minutes before this on a SW1500). Pump Date: 04/23/14 20:56 Re: GP20's are cool... Author: PasadenaSub Wow, an actual GP20 in this day and age. Great set of photos.

It is nice to still see one with its turbo intact. After upgrading about 15 SP GP20s retained their turbos, while most of the rest received normally aspirated 16-546 engines. A few were equipped with Roots blowers when their turbos were removed. Date: 04/23/14 23:40 Re: GP20's are cool... Author: SD70M Let's hope I see this baby when I come over the big pond next week, I saw it last year switching cars at Holmes Dry Wall on a Sunday.

Wow, another great thing to see in this day and age. Date: 04/24/14 11:53 Re: GP20's are cool... Author: sagehen What really makes the units looking good is the slight slope on the low front hood. SP's last GP9s had the same body. Chopped noses just don't look right because the top of the short hood is left perfectly level.

Even though the engines are 'normally aspirated' they still require a scavenging blower because they are 2-cycle. The scavenging blower is the 'Roots' blower, made by the Roots company in Connersville IN. Without them, neither 567's nor 645's would be able to run. Date: 04/24/14 13:06 Re: GP20's are cool... Santa Fe never de-turboed their 70+ GP20's. Most of their units that went on to second owners still have their turbos as well. Date: 04/25/14 12:27 Re: GP20's are cool... Author: TCnR Great photos, the first one does look like a Cannon and Company project locomotive.
