WP GP40 at Socal Industry?
Author: TomCarter

A while back, I could have sworn I read that a former WP/Wisconsin Central GP40 had migrated down to Southern California as an industry switcher, I believe at a Cement plant or quarry? Does that sound familiar to anyone? I have spent a couple of hours searching TO but to no avail, I can't find the thread. Does this sound familiar to anyone? If so, which engine is it? I'm trying to figure out where WP 3541 ended up.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Why? Are you looking to paint something red, white, and blue now? ;-)

For a short while there was a Watco ex-WP GP35 at Ventura Foods in Ontario (So Cal) but it had issues and was quickly replaced with a WAMX GP35 of PRR heritage. This is in addition to the ex-WP units (also GP35s) at Pacific Sun RR.

I don't know of a former WP GP40 in the region but I'm 5,000 miles from there right now so maybe one snuck in since I've been away.

BTW, EJV asked the same thing a week ago with no responses.

Isn't there at least one former WP GP35/40 at the cement plant in Oro Grande (Between Victorville and Barstow CA)?

Last time I was in Oro Grande there was a former BAR GP38 No. 362 and WAMX 3845, a former SP GP35 that is apparently classified as a GP38-2 now.

The 2 units ( Both WAMX ) have left for points unknown, last seen Heading EB on the BNSF in Northern AZ

I'd like to eventually.

Apparently, CN let go of it a while back, so I'm just practicing due diligence and keeping tabs on it, *just in case* the planets all align and we get an opportunity to get our grubby little hands on it for the collection in Portola. A preserved Bicentennial would be great to have, not to mention one of the iconic WP loco models.

Those 2 GP35s have been replaced by 2 ex-WC GP40s painted and lettered for Harbor Rail Services, at TXI Cement in Oro Grande. Probably the 2 you are looking for, but don't know if they are exx-WP.

Well, close. Ex-WC 3000 is ex-WP 3517 and ex-WC 3006 is ex-WP 3523.

I went back looking thru some notes I have, I believe but am not 100% sure that this GP40 your looking for is at Oro Grande, CA or was back earlier in the year when I passed by. I know that WC 3023 was repainted into Canadian National colors (with WC initials on the cab) so it would not be in Wisconsin Central colors any longer. If my notes are correct, it is now numbered HRSX 3002 and has a red nose (with logo), red cab and front of the long hood while the rest was still black. I don't have a photo unfortunately, but I do believe this might be your missing locomotive. Hopefully this helps. Next time I am up by Oro Grande, I will keep an eye out for it.
