San Francisco Freight But Not Quint St.
Author: sliderslider

It's Carroll Ave. lead off the east side track between tunnel 3 and 4. There's a single customer out there and this sequence of pics show delivery of a single reefer. And aside from Quint St. lead's two customers, that's all there is!

The lead runs basically down Carroll Ave across Third St. with it's Muni tracks and to a switch for the warehouse's spur that runs length of building. The rest of the lead beyond this point once went all the way to Hunter's Point but appears out of service now, with no spurs on Carroll before it disappears into fenced off ROW.

In the pics above the thread is the train running past Carroll Ave. to the switch and then pushing the reefer down the lead, which now runs through a construction site. Pictures from a few years ago show this whole area was an empty lot with apparently zero fencing of any kind. Very thoroughly secured now and will soon get more new housing units I suspect.

In the pics below you can see the train pull out of the spur and the diamond in the middle of third street which is shared with the light rail Muni trains. Here's that same crossing from same vantage point as pic 2 below about 12 years ago: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,3399401,3399425#msg-3399425

Back then this area was apparently called Griffith St.

The pulled through this curve and past a Caltrain gate then sat there for the northbound local Caltrain to come by. Then they returned to South City.

The two pics below show a couple of views that will prove impossible to duplicate in a matter of months, and I'm sure will only grow stranger with each passing year. In the top pic the trailing locomotives nose is just visible poking out from behind building. The below pic is of locomotives in same position from the road over tunnel 3.

nice photos ... last time i was there in 2008 we went by Carroll St on our way to a football at Giants Stadium (the reason for the trip) ... i heard "THE ROCK" Dwayne Johnson is filming this week in the area of Giants Stadium for his movie SAN ANDERAS so i guess the stadium didn't get destroyed yet

Candlestick. Yeah and Paul McCArtney is going to rock Candlestick before it's torn down also.

Neat sequence. Got pretty familiar with the Carroll Avenue lead helping move GGRM out of Hunter's Point several years ago. Interesting piece of trackage, several gates to go through and everyone parked RIGHT in the clearance. Here are some great shots by Alex Ramos of one of the GGRM moves starting on Carroll Ave.: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,1110763,1110804#msg-1110804

Interesting to note that Portola's WP 707 and WP 2001 (which helped pull the GGRM move trains) have not been the only WP power on that line. UP 1495 started her career in September 1971 as WP 3544, the last GP40 the railroad acquired.

Thanks for sharing!

The last big time event on the Carroll Lead was the final last minute evacuation of GGRM equipment from Hunters Point on Dec. 30 and 31, 2006. SP 2472 was part of that group and is seen at the shipyard gate and then curving onto Carroll. This was GGRM's last stand in the City.

Thanks for the photos. I remember the area back when Coca-Cola had their big bottling plant going, and Hunter's Point Shipyards was still in operation.
