Western Railroad Discussion > CNW 8646 along the Cima and Cajon SubdivisionsDate: 08/01/14 08:10 CNW 8646 along the Cima and Cajon Subdivisions Author: z-trains Two days ago my father and I headed up to Afton canyon on a tip that CNW 8646, one of the "final two" unpatched CNW DASH 9-44CW's left on UP's system, which was leading the K-G1LA west. While in the canyon, which was only accessible by driving through some high water, we caught three trains in total, plus one on the outside of the canyon at Dunn, and some bighorn sheep, which came down to the Mojave from the hills surrounding the canyon, as seen in clip 1. Around 2PM, the westbound came, and it's shown passing bridge #2 over the Mojave River in the heart of the canyon(Clip 2). Afterwards, the train hit the hill climbing out of Dunn towards Field, allowing us to get ahead of it and catch it descending through the big curve at Manix (Clip 3). Afterwords, the 8646 stopped at Minneola Rd. to wait for an Eastbound intermodal train to pass it, and once that was out of the way, it continued its journey west (Clip 4). At Daggett, there was traffic ahead waiting to get onto the BNSF mainline, so it waited for a good half-hour before moving forward towards Barstow and the Cajon Subdivision (Clip 5). After catching it at Helendale and Bryman, we went over to the twin bridges over the Mojave river at East Victorville to get one last shot of the train, and captured it right as the sun came out (Clip 6). The picture is the train at Afton. The entire hour and a half long video can be seen on my YouTube channel, Railfanjunction, under the title "HD: Cajon, Cima, and Needles Subdivision Railfanning in July 2014".
