Belle of the Ball

I remember a long-ago time when I had to force myself to go shoot a little bit of Kansas City Southern. Needless to say I was not a huge fan of solid white power that got grungy-dirty looking really fast. Don’t get me wrong, the KCS was big-time railroading with some interesting territory to run through. But it seemed that whenever I went fanning around Kansas City there were always more colorful fish in the ol’ RR stream.

Time has this funny way of changing your outlook. That, and a far more interesting paint scheme. Two of them, as a matter of fact. I applauded KCS’ change over to the grey oriented scheme a few years ago, and I’m really liking the current throw-back to the classic Southern Belle scheme.

So when I’m out having a ball chasing the NS’ NYC heritage scheme I’m doubly pleased to be able to include a KCS Belle I knew nothing about ahead of time. Here are a few shots of an unexpected waltz with the “Belle of the Ball”…

1. KCS 3918 is leading train MDMHN-29, sitting on main #2 meeting the NS’s Ney York Central heritage unit on an eastbound string of auto racks at Dwight, KS.
