Denver's Union Station has been newly renovated and had its grand opening last weekend, July 26. We did not make it down for the festivities, but took a trip down this Sunday morning. It was bustling with activity and energy. We arrived around 7:45 a.m. and there were lots of people waiting for the arrival of Amtrak Train #5 from Chicago. It was due in at 7:15 and arrived at around 10:20 a.m.

We tried to show as much of the Great Hall as possible in the photos. The top three floors are the Crawford Hotel. The first level has comfy couches and tables for waiting, as well as several restaurants and shops. The developers did a beautiful job of making it more functional, while still keeping the beauty and grandeur of the structure.

And by comparison, Utah's capital city has a mobile home for Amtrak passengers and bus shelters for commuter rail.

I was through there a number of years back when the station was a dump. They really did a nice restoration to the glory of this magnificent part of our past and present history. Great work Colorado.

The loss of a rail connection for what now is a retail mall that is dying.

Very nice. We used that station for Under Siege II. I can't believe that was 20 years ago.

That seating looks far more comfortable than what was there before the renovation!

I seem to recall a model railway in the station basement was
asked to leave just as the renovation was beginning.

Have they been asked back, or is the eviction permanent?

TO readers are waiting for a report on the Crawford as a place to stay in Denver.
Would seem a great place with light rail connections far and wide and serious train watching by walking to one of the overpasses to the west.

Early in the planning and construciton the "developers" promised the model group there would be room in the renovated station, and they had to leave during construciton. Guess what? About a year ago the "developers" suddenly realized the space was needed for something else and told the MR group that they could no longer accomidate them.....Oh well, maybe they will find some other locaton.
