Chicago Terminal RR - Elk Grove Village
Author: kevink

Chicago Terminal Railroad operates a few miles of former Milwaukee Road and Chicago NorthWestern tracks in two industrial parks in Elk Grove Village, IL. Yesterday, I was on Foster Avenue when I crossed the tracks and found ILSX 921 waiting for its next assignment. The spur behind the engine leads to a paper recycling facility that appears to ship by rail as a Railbox car was inside the building.

Added on 7/10/16:
This is actually in Bensenville, not Elk Grove Village. The Bensenville operation comes off the CP and the Elg Grove Village operation comes off the UP.

I found one other industry that appears to receive tank cars of corn syrup.

Is that the line that crosses Mannheim and looks like a deserted trolley line?

No. This is between York Road and IL Rte. 83 (Kingery Hwy.) west of O'Hare. You may be thinking of the Indiana Harbor Belt tracks that cross Mannheim just south of Armitage Avenue.

Kevin, is that line (the IHB line) still used?

Not sure. I have not been over that way in a while. Back in 2011, there were still two customers at the end of the branch but they were not frequent shippers.

Yes, but as Kevin says, not often. Alois Box and Container Specialties still occasionally take shipments. The line is known as the IH Lead, or more fully, the International Harvester Lead. Its main customer originally was an Intl Harvester plant that closed many years ago.

That's one eerie logo.

Tor, it makes perfect sense to a Chicagoan.

The red stars and blue stripes are motifs from the Chicago flag. The background is symbolic of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and the building is the Water Tower, which reputedly was the only structure to survive the fire. The Chicago Terminal's other line is mostly north and east of the Chicago River and its North Branch, which was pretty much leveled by the fire.

When you see it that way, one thing becomes obvious: it should have been burned around the edges, rather than just peeled off in places. (It is a rather eerie subject for a railroad logo.)
