Western Railroad Discussion > When will it happen?Date: 01/29/15 16:03 When will it happen? Author: ptroyal The train approaching the diamond at the depot in Tyler was a Z train westbound on the Corsicana sub. UP C44AC 7281 and UP C44ACCTE 5918 on the point. It was followed by a mixed freight with UP SD70ACe 8338 and UP C41-8W 9521 on the point and UP C44AC 6400 on the rear. A closer look at the left rail on the diamond revealed a large chunk of the trailing edge was missing. Can the part be replaced or will they have to replace the whole unit?

This is an example of smart maintenance. The damaged part used to be the corner that took the impacts from both directions of travel while the opposite end never had a wheel touch it. The design idea is that the frog can be completely unbolted, then the casting in the center can be rotated so the formerly untouched corner now takes the traffic. Lots of labor but pretty practical concept. Unbolting the rails is the hard part because often they are welded into adjoining rails these days. |
