BNSF GE's delivered without lettering.
Author: glord

Caught these BNSF C-44,s at Lacrosse Wis shortly after delivery. They made a few trips until they were shopped and lettered.

Yeah, someone with good photoshop skills should put a Milwaukee Road on the side and change the letters on the cab to MILW

The first 100+ Dash-9's of the order that started delivery in January 1998 with #4720 showed up in the condition illustrated - just orange and green paint, the road number, and small "BNSF" sublettering, no stripes, no noseband, no big BNSF on the side. The story at the time was that BNSF was desperate for power and wanted the units delivered as soon as possible - they would worry about applying the stickers later. By the time the 4900's started arriving in late 1998, BNSF was still taking new GE's in unlettered form but then immediately shuffling them off to Mid-America Car for the lettering and stripes. The earlier units ran around for several months in unlettered form, but were also getting their stickers applied by late 1998. The ranks of the undecorated dwindled through the first part of 1999, and supposedly the very last straggler, BNSF 4874, got its stripes and lettering in April 2000, better than half a year after the second-to-last unit was striped.

Yeah that's cool, but that silver underframe is hideous on a Milwaukee Road unit.

Actually the SD70ACe's delivered the same way but with black and orange paint were much
closer.

Actually, I thought this paint scheme also looked like the Milwaukee Road! Thanks for sharing!

A hundred and fifty years from now some future railfan will find the TO archive on some library database and wonder why the Milwaukee hadn't bought any new power in 40+ years.
